ORGANIZING BASICS

Workers form a union in order to have a greater voice at work. Union organizing occurs from the bottom up when you join with your co-workers and friends to collectively demand your employer’s recognition in the workplace.

The National Labor Relations Act ensures your right to collectively bargain with your employer and to form a union as your exclusive bargaining representative.

AUTHORIZATION CARDS: WHAT ARE THEY REALLY FOR?

Bosses mislead workers about the purpose of authorization cards.

Signed authorization cards are used to tally worker support for organizing. If enough workers in a bargaining unit sign authorization card (30% or more) requesting representation from a union they can call for a union election vote.

Signed authorization cards are completely confidential.
